President Yoon Sung-yeol has been removed from office, 111 days after the National Assembly voted to impeach him for declaring martial law. The Constitutional Court unanimously upheld the impeachment motion Friday, bringing his presidency to an abrupt end more than two years before his five-year term was up. Justice Moon Young-bae, the court's acting president, said Yoon broke the law when he ordered troops dispatched to the National Assembly on December 3rd.

Soldiers entered the National Assembly premises using helicopters and other means, and some even broke windows and entered the main building. The former president also ordered the Army's Special Operations Commander to smash doors and drag lawmakers out by force to prevent them from voting to strike down the martial law decree. Despite the order, the National Assembly quickly voted down the decree, and DoD lost it only six hours. But for many South Koreans, it brought back memoriesof the early 1980s, when soldiers massacred civilians.

Yoon argued that he imposed martial law because the opposition-led Parliament created a national emergency, exercising legislative tyranny by impeaching an unprecedented number of top officials and unilaterally cutting the budget. But the court said there was no serious crisis facing the nation that could have justified martial law.

In a message disclosed by his legal team, Yoon said he is deeply grateful to those who supported him. He went on to say that it was a great honor to work for South Korea, before adding that he will always pray for his beloved country and its people.

Main opposition Democratic Party Chair Lee Jae-myung says "The Korean people have dramatically revived democracy in the nation with what he termed a revolution of light" and expressed respect and gratitude to the people. He made the remark on Friday in a news conference held shortly after the Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment of former president Yoon Sung-yeol.

Seoul subway trains are currently passing through Anguk Station on Line 3 without stopping.
Seoul Metro announced trains began bypassing Anguk Station starting at 4 p.m. Thursday as a safety measure, anticipating crowds gathering near the court for rallies ahead of the ruling. On Friday, access to Anguk Station and exits 4 and 5 at the nearby Jongno Samga Station is completely restricted. Starting Friday morning, all exits of Han Gangjin Station on Seoul subway line 6 have been closed, and trains are currently bypassing the station without stopping.

The United States has revised its reciprocal tariff rate for South Korea to 25% from 26%.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said Friday that the US confirmed the lower rate after confusion arose the previous day. US President Donald Trump displayed a chart listing a reciprocal tariff rate of 25% for South Korea when he unveiledhis sweeping tariffs on Wednesday at the White House. But an annex to Trump's executive order posted later in the day said it was 26%. The White House initially said the figure in the annex was correct, but the US confirmed that it should be 25% when the South Korean government inquired.

Some South Korean nationals residing in Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city, which suffered massive damage from last week's earthquake, have evacuated to Yangon. According to the South Korean embassy in Myanmar on Friday, around 20 South Korean nationals who reside in Mandalay evacuated by car to Yangon, which had minimal impact from the earthquake. The embassy requested the evacuation due to concerns over aftershocks and rain. The Korean Association in Mandalay estimates that there were about 70 South Korean nationals residing in Mandalay before the earthquake struck.
